Shalom Tamarack Chaverim:
When my wife, Lisa, and I were visiting camp a few summers ago, we were on our way to the Chedar Ochel when we walked by a drink stand. An Avodah camper (special needs) was pouring drinks for thirsty grateful campers. The campers greeted the young man by name. Several of them engaged him in conversation. What stood out about this scene was not that an Avodah camper was helping out in day-to-day camp life. What was remarkable was that the campers were conversing with the young man as they would any other. There was no patronization, no pretense—just a normal encounter with another Tamarack camper on a hot July day..
These past five months since joining Tamarack Camps have been an exciting whirlwind of activity. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with so many outstanding individuals who collectively make our Tamarack Camps family such an exceptional community.
This offseason, with my wife, Robin, and two children, Jamie and Andy, I had the joy of traveling to Disney World. While experiencing the Magic Kingdom, at the “happiest place on earth,” it struck me that, in fact, there are many similarities to Camp Maas, the “greatest place on earth.”
“Check out these photos of the Kennedy Birch Bark Plaques and see if you can find your name!”
On a cold, rainy Memorial Day weekend, nearly 20 people gathered at Camp Kennedy, a place that was once pivotal in their lives and the lives of loved ones. They came from Chicago, from New York City and from metro Detroit and included alumni from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Some were visiting for the first time while others were back for what has become an annual tradition. The Kennedy Work Weekend is the only place that many would want to be. Beyond the allure of the Mackinac Bridge, the Upper Peninsula, and the Pictured Rocks was the beauty of Nevins Lake and the peace and tranquility of Camp Kennedy.
Back in 2002, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit partnered with Tamarack Camps to bring Israeli teens to the Detroit community and experience camp. This summer, those three weeks have turned into 10 years. The Israeli Camper program, which has brought over 1,000 Israelis to Detroit to share Tamarack’s unique Jewish camping experience, celebrated its 10-year anniversary in Israel’s Central Galilee with hundreds of past Israeli-participants and Detroiters in attendance.

“Off Season: In The Beginning (Spring)”
For those who have come up through the ranks of summer camp, it may be difficult to imagine Tamarack Camps in the non-summer months. Oftentimes the Outdoor Education staff gets asked the question, “What do you do in the off season?” Our usual, friendly response is that we don’t have an off season at Tamarack Camps!

What a great year for Family Camping!
There is a “buzz” in the air about Tamarack Camps and our Family Camp Program. We began 2011 with a sold-out New Year’s Family Camp and added six congregational family camps to our calendar this season. We are about to enter our summer season, which consists of nine Bubbie-Zaydie Camp Weekends and a Fourth of July Family Camp Weekend.
Shirley A. Mopper Legacy
Tamarack has been the “The Greatest Place on Earth” for 11 decades because of the countless people who choose to become involved and it is because of this support that Tamarack’s legacy lives on. The powerful impact of a Tamarack experience provides Jewish children and families with an opportunity to learn about themselves, gain a sense of independence, appreciate the value of group cooperation, explore their Judaism, and realize the incredible value of a larger Jewish community--all in a beautiful outdoor setting.
Jack Robinson Among Eight Honored at JSL’s ‘Eight Over Eighty’ Event
“Ambition, comradeship, diligence, talent, and love” are all characteristics of Jack Robinson as described by Frankel Academy junior, Alex Vieder, at the Eight Over Eighty event this past May at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Each year, the event, sponsored by Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit, recognizes eight distinguished senior adults, all over eighty years old, who have demonstrated a dedication throughout their lifetimes to the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World. Each honoree is paired with a student to speak on their behalf.
